Drilling Industry Reference Committee (IRC)

The Australian Industry and Skills Committee (AISC) called for nominations from suitably qualified and experiences individuals for the vacant organisational and individual industry expert positions on the Drilling Industry Reference Committee (IRC) as listed in the table below. Nominations closed COB Monday 28 November 2016.

Drilling sub-sectors include:

  • drilling services for mineral exploration and production
  • energy drilling (Coal and Geothermal)
  • water-well drilling
  • geotechnical and environmental for the resources
  • civil construction
  • government and agriculture sectors.

Drilling is conducted on-shore and off-shore; as well as surface and underground. Each of the sub-sectors performs a variety of drilling methods, with several being common across the different sectors. This allows a reasonable level of skills transfer between the sectors. Drilling contractors have a wide geographical spread across the country and can range from smaller owner operators with 1-2 drill rigs servicing a specific sector, through to large organisations with more than 50 drill rigs who often undertake a broader range of work.

The Drilling IRC will have responsibility for relevant components of the:

IRC Structure

The draft structure for the Drilling IRC was published on this website on 11 October 2016, providing an opportunity for industry to comment on whether the structure would adequately represent the industry. The structure was amended in consultation with the IRC chair based on feedback received from stakeholders. The structure now includes an expert in construction related drilling and has clarified that the oil and gas drilling expertise position includes well servicing.
