Training snapshot
After a sharp fall between 2017 and 2018, program enrolments in Telecommunications Technology remained relatively stable, until increasing to from 3,650 in 2020 to 4,200 in 2021. Program completions in this sector followed a similar pattern, falling from a high of approximately 2,260 in 2017 to 1,310 in 2018 and remaining relatively steady until 2020 before decreasing in 2021 to 990. The majority of enrolments in 2021 were at the certificate III level (56%), with 32% at the diploma level or higher.
In 2021, most enrolments were either in (telecommunications) Technology-related qualifications (66%) or (telecommunications) Networks-related qualifications (33%). The most common intended occupations for this sector were Telecommunications Technician (45%) or Telecommunications Network Engineer (31%).
Almost all enrolments in 2021 were via private training providers (94%). Overall, more than half of the funding for subjects came from Commonwealth and state funding (51%), followed by domestic (28%) and international fee for service (21%).
Students located overseas made up the highest proportion of program enrolments (31%) in 2021, followed by students from New South Wales (23%), Queensland (18%), and Victoria (13%). New South Wales delivered the highest proportion of training (38%), with Queensland delivering 25% and Victoria 18%.
In 2021, there were around 2,170 apprentice and trainee commencements in this sector. Commencement numbers are down from their peak in 2013 of nearly 6,870 but have more than doubled since the 2020 level of approximately 1,060. Completion numbers were at their highest in 2014 at approximately 4,330 and have continued to fall since then to a low of 370 in 2021.
In 2021, most apprentices and trainees in-training in (telecommunications) Technology-related qualifications had the intended occupation of Telecommunications Technician. The highest proportions of apprentices and trainees in-training were reported in New South Wales (32%), followed by Victoria (25%) and Queensland (19%).
