Training snapshot
There were approximately 2,370 program enrolments in Electronics and Computers related qualifications during 2021, and over 930 completions. Both program enrolments and completions have decreased overall between 2017 and 2021, with small increases in enrolments recorded in 2019 and 2021. Completions have declined each year since a peak of 1,040 in 2019.
More than one third (38%) of enrolments during 2021 were at the certificate II level for Electronics and Computers related qualifications, while most of the remaining enrolments occurred at a certificate III (33%) and diploma or higher (22%) level.
More than half of the enrolments were in the qualifications of Certificate II, III & IV in Electronics and Communications (58%) with the intended occupations of Electronic Equipment Trades Worker and Electrical or Telecommunications Trades Assistant.
Approximately 17% of enrolments were in the Certificate II in Computer Assembly and Repair / Certificate II in Electronic Assembly qualifications with the intended occupation of an Electrical or Telecommunications Trades Assistant, while 16% of enrolments were in a Diploma or Advanced Diploma of Electronics and Communications Engineering, which had the sole intended occupation of an Electronic Engineering Technician.
For enrolments during 2021, TAFE institutes provided the majority of all training (77%), with the remainder split between private training providers (13%), universities (9%) and schools (1%). Most training that was delivered by universities was at the diploma and above level.
For subject enrolments during 2021, almost three quarters (74%) were Commonwealth and state funded, with the remaining portion made up by international fee for service (16%) and domestic fee for service (11%). This varied significantly for private training providers where the majority of enrolments were international fee for service (81%), with the remainder funded by domestic fee for service.
One quarter of students enrolled in Electronics and Computers related qualifications during 2021 were from Western Australia (25%), followed by New South Wales (23%), Victoria (16%) and overseas (12%). Additionally, training was predominantly delivered in Western Australia (30%), Victoria (26%), and New South Wales (24%).
In 2021, there were approximately 330 apprentice and trainee commencements in Electronics and Computers related qualifications. After a slight increase in 2020, commencement figures have declined to levels similar to those seen in 2018 and 2019, but are still above the lowest figure in 2017 of around 280. Completions figures peaked at close to 340 in 2014 and have declined overall since then, with a slight increase in 2017, a significant increase to over 330 in 2020 before falling to just under 260 in 2021.
Almost all apprentices in training were undertaking the Certificate III in Electronics and Communications qualification in 2021, and training towards the intended occupation of Electronic Equipment Trades Worker. Over half (55%) of training was reported by New South Wales, followed by Queensland at 16% and Western Australia at 13%.
