Overall, program enrolments in Building Completion Services-related qualifications increased from approximately 44,710 in 2017 to 55,560 in 2021. Over the same time frame, program completions rose from 9,600 to more than 13,920.
All program enrolments in the Building Completion Services-related sector were at the certificate III level in 2021 and more than three-quarters (76%) were in Carpentry and Joinery. The most common intended occupation for the training in this sector was Carpenter (76%).
Approximately half (52%) of training in Building Completion Services-related qualifications was delivered by private training providers in 2021, with TAFE institutes delivering 44%. However, there was considerable variation by qualification cluster; private training providers delivered approximately 70% of Painting, Decorating and Solid Plastering qualifications while TAFE institutes delivered about 60% of Shopfitting and Formwork/Falsework qualifications. Nearly two-thirds (64%) of all Building Completion Services-related subjects were Commonwealth and state funded in 2021. Over half (58%) of subjects delivered by private training providers were funded via through domestic fee for service (39%) and international fee for service (19%).
New South Wales (30%) had the highest proportion of students enrolled in Building Completion-related qualifications, followed by Victoria (26%) and Queensland (21%). Just under a third (32%) of the training was delivered in Victoria, followed by New South Wales (29%) and Queensland (25%).
Overall, apprentice and trainee commencements in Building Completion Services-related qualifications increased from approximately 9,940 in 2012 to 17,760 in 2021. Between 2020 and 2021, commencements increased approximately 33%. Between 2012 and 2021, the number of completions fluctuated, from a peak of about 7,620 in 2014 to a low of approximately 5,800 in 2016. In 2021, about 7,560 completions were recorded.
The most common intended occupation for apprentices and trainees in this sector was Carpenter (82%). More than a third of apprentices in training (34%) were reported in New South Wales, followed by Victoria (28%) and Queensland (21%) in 2021.
